Tariq Nasr al-Fadhli is considered a prominent jihadi from the south of Yemen who grew up in Saudi Arabia after a socialist party, Al-Hizb al-Ishtiraki al-Yamani, took over the province of Abyan. Al-Fadhli joined the Mujahideen in the Afghan-Soviet war and returned to Yemen where he was alleged to have assisted Maulana Masood Azhar acquire recruits to fight in Somalia. Al-Fadhli was also suspected of leading an Al-Qaeda cell that attempted an attack on U.S forces en route to Somalia in 1992.
