Khattab Al-Masri was a military commander and one of the longest serving Al-Qaeda operatives within Al-Shabaab. Al-Masri is believed to have arrived in Sudan in 1991 with Osama bin Laden and other Al-Qaeda operatives, some of whom were involved in the U.S embassy bombings. Al-Masri continued on with Al-Shabaab and came to side with Omar Hammami in a public spat between the American jihadi and Ahmed Abdi Godane between 2012 and 2013. Al-Masri was able to reconcile with Al-Shabaab’s leadership up after handing himself over to the Amniyat.
In June 2016, Al-Masri was killed during an attack on an Ethiopian base near Halgan, Somalia.
