Hassan Abdullah Hersi al-Turki’s militant career began with his participation in the Ogaden War between 1977 and 1978, before he became a military commander within Al-Itihaad al-Islamiya (AIAI) and the military wing of the Islamic Courts that would eventually be Al-Shabaab. Al-Turki was also the leader of the infamous Ras Kamboni Brigades, an insurgent group which formed part of Hizbul Islam, led by Hassan Dahir Aweys. Al-Turki survived a targeted U.S airstrike in 2008 before passing away from an unknown illness in 2015
