Organisation/s: Al-Qaeda (suspected)
Nationality/ies: South African
Travel History: (United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom) Mexico, United States
Farida Goolam Mohamed Ahmed was arrested in July 2004 after attempting to enter the United State (US) illegally through Mexico. She was found in possession of about $6 300, a pair of wet and muddy pants in one of her bags, plane tickets and flight schedules in another showing how she traveled from Johannesburg to Dubai, to London then to Mexico City. However, federal authorities were prompted to investigate when they found 6 pages of her passport torn out. Ahmed was held on suspicion of being an Al-Qaeda operative after her name was alleged to have been found on a US watchlist of suspected terrorists.
Ahmed pleaded guilty to illegal entry but maintained her innocence regarding her possible links to Al-Qaeda. It remains unclear what exactly led to the arrest of Feroz Ibrahim and Zubair Ismail in Pakistan less than a week after her arrest or if their arrest had something to do with Ahmed at all.
In 2005, Ahmed was deported back to South Africa for time served.
