Al-Itihaad Al-Islamiya (AIAI) was a militant Islamist inaurgency established in 1984 in opposition to the Siad Barre regime and Ethiopia’s control of Ogaden. AIAI only became active from 1992 after Osama bin Laden’s arrival in Sudan, who deployed Al-Qaeda operatives to train and provide resources to the insurgents. AIAI was essentially defeated by Ethiopian forces in 1996, though some members managed to instigate a few attacks until 2005.
