Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani was on the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Most Wanted List in 2001 for his alleged involvement in the 1998 bombings of United States (US) embassies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and Nairobi, Kenya. In 2004, Ghailani was captured in a 14-hour gun battle in Pakistan alongside two South Africans, Feroz Ibrahim and Zubair Ismail, as part of a special joint operation involving U.S forces. Ghailani was detained in Pakistan until 2009 before he was transferred to Guantanamo Bay. In 2011, Ghailani was sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in the bombings.
