Abu Hurayra was about 18 years old when he traveled from Johannesburg to Syria to join the Islamic State, which was around the same time the Moosagies left Port Elizabeth to do the same. Hurayra was active on social media using platforms such as Twitter and Instagram, where he sought to portray a noble and comfortable life under the Islamic State in an attempt to appeal to South Africans to join the group.
By the end of 2015, Hurayra’s social media activities ceased and his last known location was the Tabqa Dam in Syria.
